AARP Experience Corps/AmeriCorps Classroom Literacy Tutor

Baltimore City AARP Experience Corps/AmeriCorps Classroom Literacy Tutor Position Description

Directly reports to: Team Leader and Volunteer Engagement Specialist

Service Position Summary: This member is a person recruited from the community who is embedded into a kindergarten through third grade classroom to develop children's literacy skills. The member collaborates with the classroom teaching staff to enhance daily literacy opportunities and conduct literacy assessments to ensure children are on track to read on grade level by the end of 3rd grade.

Essential Functions:
  • Provide intentional and meaningful literacy instruction during all parts of the day to improve the literacy skills of children in kindergarten through third grade,

  • Perform literacy assessments three times throughout the year during the specified benchmark windows

  • Conduct ongoing progress monitoring between benchmark windows to monitor children's growth

  • Use results of the assessment data to reflect on and inform classroom teacher and team leader of student's growth

  • Collaborate with the classroom teacher to facilitate small group literacy instruction

  • Enhance the classroom literacy environment

  • Participate in monthly school based in-service sessions coordinated by the Team Leader

  • Attend pre-service literacy and program training


  • Secondary Functions:
  • Attend site-sponsored activities to represent AARP EC (i.e. family night, book fairs, etc.)

  • Participate in site-sponsored trainings, meetings or other school-time activities

  • Participate in site-sponsored or EC programmatic events


  • Qualifications:
  • Strong interest in education, specifically helping children develop literacy skills

  • Dedication to community service

  • Speak, read, and write English fluently

  • Responsible, organized, flexible, motivated

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to make a commitment to complete 10 months of service (August 2012 - June 30, 2013)

  • Must be at least 55-years-old

  • High school diploma or GED

  • U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident alien

  • Must submit to and successful pass a National Sex Offender Public Registry check, FBI, and state criminal background check


  • Requirements:
  • Complete a 30 hour pre-service training

  • Complete an application

  • Submit a bi-weekly timesheet to report service hours

  • Completes a minimum of 450 hours during the school year (see note below)


  • Service Environment:
    Ability to work in a typical preschool classroom setting with active young children.


    NOTE: Additional positions to serve 5 or 10 hours a week may also be available in multiple schools throughout Baltimore City.
