What People Are Saying

Invaluble Resource
David Diokno, Ed.D, Principal-Scales Technology Academy: A School for Innovative Learning
We have been so appreciative of the support shown by our Experience Corps volunteers. They have made a substantial difference in the lives of our children, both academically and socially/emotionally. Our children have developed strong bonds over the past two years as they have worked with their mentors. The students look forward to their reading time with Experience Corps! The Experience Corps volunteers have played a critical role in the increased academic achievement of our students and school. Over the past two years, we have seen a marked increase, across the school in our academic achievement, based on our district's Comprehensive Achievement Analysis. Two years ago when we started with Experience Corps, we were ranked last out of all of the district schools. This year, we started the year 9th out of 18 schools, moving up 7 spots, the most academic progress out of all district schools. Experience Corps is an invaluable resource for Scales Technology Academy.

Rewarding
Bobbie Jordan, Retired Nurse
It has been a rewarding experience working in Experience Corps. I've worked with K-3 students with personal and educational challenges. The one on one attention and encouragement the tutors provide works. Kindergartners start out shy and timid requiring patience and persistence from the tutor. First graders are over active and challenging requiring firmness and discipline the Experience Corps tutors have been trained to give. The second and third grade students may know how to read but are in a comfort zone below grade level. They require encouragement and the challenge a tutor can provide to accurately read faster and further.

The students provide a mental and physical challenge to the tutors also. Some of us as tutors are older with challenges of our own. Experience Corps has given us a chance to be in the community and share our skills, knowledge and experience.

This Has Exceeded My Wildest Dreams
William Clifford, Experience Corps member, retired debt collections agent
"You can't imagine how a first-grader can challenge you. I wanted to do something entirely different, something exciting, something useful. This exceeded beyond my wildest dreams."
